I am a first-generation American born and raised in The Bronx. I am the son of two Peruvian immigrants who I call Ma and Pa. My parents immigrated to the United States over 30 years ago to start a family and new life. While my parents never went to college, they ended up raising three children who are now college graduates. Oddly enough, the three of us (my brother, sister, and me) graduated with a B.S. in Accounting from CUNY Lehman College. However, I’m the only one who opted to switch career fields, while they are now both auditors. In addition to being a first-generation college graduate, I am the first in my family to enlist in the United States military, specifically the New York Army National Guard.
Growing up, my family didn’t really have much financially. My dad was the only one bringing in money through his job as a tailor. He was paid based on commission, so a good paycheck was never guaranteed. Despite our financial issues, my dad always made sure we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. It’s weird I say all this because when I was kid, I didn’t really notice this. For everything my parents have done for me, I am forever in debt to them.
I started this blog to connect with others who may have a similar story. I know what it’s like to be the shy kid. I know what it’s like to live in a not so good neighborhood. I’ve been that confused student who can’t go to their parents for help on navigating college. I lived in a home with both parents primarily speaking a language that wasn’t English. I overcame those financial challenges that would cause worrisome. I went to a non-target school, yet busted my ass to secure great internship/job offers. My story is no more special than anyone out there because I know I’m not the only one and I love knowing that.
If you’re a student who’s dealing with similar challenges, I hope you read my blog as a way to learn how to navigate certain aspects of your life. I made plenty of mistakes and have some knowledge to share. If you’re someone who overcame similar challenges as I did, comment on any of the posts that resonate with you. I’m always looking to connect with people who share the same background as me!
